How to Buy Vintage Cars Safely Online

Posted: January 30, 2012 | By: | In: Autos and More

If you’re looking to buy a classic auto online, this is a good place to start. You probably have a very specific car in mind, but you’re having trouble finding your car locally. A good place to turn for any product or commodity is the internet.

Even though a luxury automobile is not the first thing you would think to buy online, it can still be done and safely at that! The most important thing to look for when you buy a vintage car is to do a very thorough inspection not of the car, but of the seller.

Trust – The Magic Word

When it comes to buying online (and anywhere for that matter) the most important aspect of the transactional relationship is trust. As a buyer, you obviously won’t buy from someone you don’t trust. The key is to identify that aspects that allow you to trust or distrust a seller.

A seller who you can trust should have the following qualities:

Testimonials Present

A trusted seller should have testimonials posted that speak positively of them and their business relationship. If there aren’t any testimonials that doesn’t mean run for the hills, but it’s definitely something you want to find on the site.

Also, any can post a fake testimonial online, and you don’t want to be mislead when buying a classic car. Good testimonials have full names, pictures, and link somewhere else online. You can always Google part of the quote to try and find if it was posted somewhere else first or use Tineye to search for the image and make sure it’s not a stock picture

Honesty

Does the car owner or broker/seller seem honest? Some good signs to look for are a nice clean design on the site and social activity. Are people tweeting good things about them?

Accreditation

Testimonials can come from just about anyone, but any official accreditation is an excellent sign. Any badge on the site signifying honors they’ve received or legitimate training or accreditation is a very good sign.

Full Contact Info

If you find a seller you like and the car you were looking for, give them a call. Any respectable seller will have a phone number, if they don’t – that’s a bad sign.

Also, if there’s something you don’t like, such as a lack of testimonials, a great way to get a better feeling for the company is to actually talk to someone there. If their response is overwhelming then just move along to protect your own financial interest.
